National Park Piatra Craiului

Piatra Craiului Massif became a nature reserve on March 28, 1938 (Journal of the Council of Ministers no. 645). Council of Ministers took the decision, because of the unique nature of the mountain where there are rare species as Dianthus callizonus, Hesperis nivea, Minuatia Transylvania Leontopodium alpinum, that because of its beauty and landscape. In 1938, when the nature reserve was established, were taken into account only 440 ha. In 1972, it increased to 900 ha area, and today, special conservation area covers an area of 4879ha, the national park occupying approx. 9894 ha. In 1952 (the year it was the first recorded forest plan for the Stone Mountains), about 17.2% of the total area of the massif has been considered for conservation.
