The Consil House (Casa Sfatului)

The Consil House (Casa Sfatului) - Though an agreement was made in 1420 that a room should be built over the furrier's arches, for town councillors, the 1421 Turkish invasion caused a delay. The building is mentioned as Praetorium in a 1503 document. The construction of its 49 m high tower was finished in 1928, but in the next century it was devastated by fires. In 1608 a lightning caused the fire, than the 1689 fire caused so much damage that the tower needed reconstruction. The building was extended with the ground-floor loggia dominated by the facade bearing the coats of arms of Brasov. In 1742 the coppersmiths attached their arches to the building. The tower got its present look in 1910. Until 1876 the building function as the city hall, than it became an archive. But for the Kronstadter Zeitung campaing at the beginning of the XXth century the building would have been demolished. Since 1950 the building houses the History Museum where one can admire archaeological, middle and modernage, as well as a pharmaceutical section.
